Balaana's invoicing is free with no cap on how many you send. Pick a client, add your lines, and Balaana produces a valid Australian tax invoice: the words "Tax invoice", your ABN, the date, a description of what you did, and the GST worked out per line. Send it as a PDF or a link, and watch what is still outstanding from one screen.
What makes an invoice a tax invoice
A client registered for GST can only claim a credit if what you sent them qualifies as a tax invoice. For sales under $1,000 the ATO requires seven things, and Balaana fills every one of them in for you:
- That the document is intended to be a tax invoice
- Your identity as the seller
- Your ABN
- The date it was issued
- A brief description of the items sold, including quantity and price
- The GST amount, or a statement that the total price includes GST
- The extent to which each sale includes GST
Over $1,000 you also need the buyer's identity or ABN — Balaana adds it automatically once an invoice crosses the threshold, so you cannot forget. The full breakdown is in our guide to invoicing with GST.
What you get on the free plan
- Unlimited invoices and quotes. No monthly cap, no per-invoice charge.
- Unlimited clients. Details saved once and reused.
- Quote to invoice. Accepted quote converts without retyping.
- GST handled per line, including mixed invoices where some items are GST-free.
- Outstanding view. What is unpaid, what is overdue, and by how long.
- PDF and CSV export, so your accountant works from your figures.
Automatic payment reminders and a Pay now button sit on the Plus plan, because those are the parts that cost us money to run.
If you are not registered for GST
Under the $75,000 turnover threshold and not registered? Turn GST off and Balaana simply leaves it off — your invoices say "Invoice" rather than "Tax invoice", with no GST line, which is exactly what an unregistered sole trader should be sending. Register later and new invoices carry GST from that date.

Frequently asked questions
As many as you like. There is no monthly cap and no per-invoice fee. The free plan is limited by features — payment collection, bank feeds and extra users — not by volume.
Custom branding — your logo and colours — is part of the Plus plan. Free invoices are clean and professional but carry Balaana’s default layout.
Not currently. Balaana is built for Australian businesses billing in AUD, and multi-currency is one of the things we deliberately do not do. If most of your clients pay in another currency, Balaana is the wrong fit.
Issue an adjustment note against it rather than editing the original, which is what the ATO expects once a tax invoice has gone out. Balaana links the adjustment to the original invoice so the GST on both nets out correctly in your BAS summary.
